Learners will have the necessary practical skills to work effectively as a liaison interpreter in community and some specialised settings

 

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning package, learners will be able to:

1.       Perform liaison interpreting tasks using accurate language and register

2.       Apply appropriate interpreting techniques for on-site and remote interpreting

3.       Apply specialised vocabulary in areas relevant to community, medical, legal and business matters

4.       Apply interpreting skills for both general and formal sight translation

5.       Demonstrate and apply an understanding of the role and ethics of a liaison interpreter


Outcome statement

This credential will enable learners to develop knowledge of NZ social systems and processes, ethnic groups, interpreting ethics and aspects of intercultural communication. They will be able to apply this knowledge in informal interpreting situations and explore a range of employment pathways including formal skills training in order to be accredited as a liaison interpreter

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1.       Identify specific contexts in which liaison interpreting occurs and describe how they relate to the broader characteristics of New Zealand social structures and institutions

2.       Identify effective interpersonal and intercultural communication skills using cultural theoretical frameworks

3.       Explain how the Professional Code of Practice is applied to interpreting events

4.       Identify a range of principles governing the conduct of the interpreter and critically evaluate their appropriateness in various settings, especially in medical and legal settings

Students will gain an overview of the use of integrated software packages in business, and intermediate level skills in word processing and spreadsheet use.

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Use a suite of software applications in a business context.
  2. Work with digital documents and electronic spreadsheets to analyse and solve business problems.
  3. Use word processing and spreadsheet software to communicate business information.
  4. Integrate Te Reo Māori within business communications.
